Perm for men : the best trends in 2020

Hot perm

The process is to apply an acidic solution to the hair, roll the hairs around heating rods. The reaction will break disulfide bonds in the hair. The results will create soft and elastic curls, the tightness depending on the rods used.
This process requires later less maintenance than cold perms for a better quality of curls, soft and bumpy, looking more natural. However this technique is not recommended for full head perm, it is usually used only applied for ends as the heat could be risky for the scalp.
The modern and popular type of hot perm is the digital perm. It gives softer curls with looser hair ends. Very popular among in Asia, it includes different famous variations such as korean or japanese perm.
An other variant is the wave perm. This type of hot perm creates loose cascading waves. It results in a softer look, suitable for shorter hairs.

Cold perm

For its part, the cold perm is obtained using an alkaline solution that contains ammonium thioglycolate.
The effect will alter the protein structure of the hair. The stylist will then apply a neutralizer solution after the perm, restoring the bond’s PH, and re-bond the the hairs,
This process is usually cheaper than a hot perm, and also less damaging. Nevertheless the results will not last as long as a hot perm, and the tighter curls will appear less natural.
